Lion’s Mane, Monkey Brain, Hedgehog mushroom, Old Man’s Beard, Yamabushitake (mountain priest mushroom) or just plain old Hericium erinaceus. What an incredible-looking fungus this is! The outlandish fruiting body is instantly recognizable.
As well as being recognisable, the fruiting body has a complex flavour that has been compared with lobster or shrimp after cooking, so it lends itself to being used in some exquisite dishes by clever chefs. Indeed, Lions Mane was once the preserve of Royalty and the aristocracy, so prized was it’s appearance and unique taste.
As with all of our fungi fruits, we aren’t going to tell you that this mushroom can be used as a medicine, but you will find a huge raft of information elsewhere online including many research papers and studies involving this species. Lions Mane, perhaps more than many other fruited fungi species has been subjected to tests on medicinal efficacy for decades – from traditional Japanese or Chinese medicines to tumour control, gastrointestinal problems, neurological issues, Alzeheimers, dementia and all sorts of other complaints. We will leave it to you to do the research elsewhere.
Our Lion’s Mane – Hericium erinaceus – is grown on natural substrates with no chemicals or additives. We carefully control humidity, temperature and light to maximise the nutritional benefits of our Lion’s Mane.
